Let's Dance!

Dancin' In Dundas

Email received - no reasons stated

December 11, 2008

Not that I am overly surprised, but the email
from the Dundas Legion President, John Murphy,
does not state the Legion's reasons for cancelling all future dates.

Mr. Murphy stated his reasons in a telephone call on
Tuesday, December 9, 2008.
His claim appears to be that the Legion is not
making any money when renting to us.
When asked about raising the rent, his response was that he
did not wish to "gouge" us (his words).
Unfortunately, he has chosen not to put his reasons into writing.

We would like to thank those who have supported us
and danced with us over the last few years.

Our first dance this time round was on November 26, 2005.
Out last dance was on December 6, 2008.
Very special thanks to the volunteers who have made it possible
for these dances to occur:
Bob and Betty Standish
Darlene Robertson
Gail Haverty

Also, many thanks to all the instructors who have taught
at our dances.

I will finish the play list from our last dance
and post it here as usual.

2009 Dances Cancelled by Legion President

December 11, 2008

Effective immediately,
the president of the Dundas Legion
has cancelled all future dances.

He has promised to have an email sent to me,
detailing the reasons for this change.

2009 Flyer Now Online.

December 3, 2008

A minor change:
The flyer linked below is now for 2009 dates only.

The Nov 16 playlist is now online.

November 21, 2008

The play list is linked below.

Enjoy!

At least we avoided the snow......

November 17, 2008

No doubt we will have lots of snow soon enough!

The weather was kind of nasty on Saturday,
which did effect some who travel a long ways.

I would like to thank all those who joined us on Saturday,
in spite of the weather!
A good crowd, and it seemed like a good time was had by all.

Fred Buckley did his usual great job of teaching a dance
choreographed by Jaci Gecelter
called "Give Me The Music".

The play list is being typed, and should be available later this week.

It was a warm summer evening.....

August 17, 2008

And many roads were closed.
However, the Dundas Cactus Festival
was not the barrier we had feared!

Many thanks to all who danced with us this past Saturday, Aug 16/08.
It was a very good turnout for a summer dance.

A very special thank-you to Lorraine Young for agreeing
at the last minute to be our guest instructor.

Lorraine taught two dances:
Mystery Cha by Paul McAdam
Feel Good Rumba by Frank Trace

The play list for August 16
will be online by the end of this week.

Dundas Cactus Festival

August 15, 2008

If you are anything like me, or anyone else I have mentioned this to,
your first reaction might have been "Huh?"!

This Saturday is the annual Dundas Cactus Festival!
Something I would have expected from a city in Arizona, maybe,
not from any place in Ontario! :-)

There is some history to why this festival happens in Dundas.
Check it out at: http://www.dundascactusfest.ca/

Why do we care?

Because they have closed a portion of the main street for the day.
And, they are having a parade along King Street
that starts at 7:00PM.
This has an effect on getting to the Legion.

Here is a Mapquest map of the west end of Dundas:
Link to map
You can also get this from Google Maps,
but you need to know that the postal code for the Legion is L9H 1W1.
That is because there are two King Streets in the area,
and both have an address of 280.
Very confusing.

As you will see from the maps, two streets run parallel to King Street.
One block to the north is Park Street West.
One block to the south is Hatt Street.
You can use either of these, depending on how you are coming,
to avoid the road closures.
If you are coming from the west (London, etc), none of this
may effect you.

Why not come down and spend the afternoon at the Cactus Festival,
then dance with us for the rest of the evening!

Better late than never.....

Again, my apologies for taking so long with this update.

At our June dance, we had a very good turnout for a summer dance!
And a GREAT lesson by Jaci Gecelter!

Jaci taught two dances: Am I? by Cato Larson,
and Duck Soup by Frank Trace.
Both have proven to be very popular in a lot of classes.
Step sheets are below.

The play list is also now available.

Change in Instructor for August 16, 2008 Dance

We have been informed that Pat Pallas will not be available
to teach at the August 16 dance.

Lorraine Young from Niagara Falls has kindly agreed
to fill this position!

Come on out and show your support for Lorraine!

Play list for June/08 dance coming soon

Our apologies for the delay in publishing the
play list for the June, 2008 dance.

This will be online shortly.

Finally - the May/08 play list is online!

Finally, after far far too long, the play list for the
May 3, 2008 dance is online.

Life is so busy at times...... :-)

A special thanks to our guest instructor, Rob McKean
from Whitby.

He managed to squeeze two great dances into the lesson time.

Judging by the number of step sheets taken, both dances
went over very well!

Bar? Who needs a bar?

A great turn out, an excellent instructor, and lots of dancing.
What more can you ask for on a Saturday night?

I expect to have the play list online by the end of this week.

As those who attended discovered, the executive of Legion Branch 36
have decided that there are not enough bar sales at our dances
to justify providing a bartender.

Therefore, anyone who wishes to purchase a drink has to
go downstairs to the clubroom,
pay for their drink,
and have it set up in the dumbwaiter.

To compensate for this, we are making nonalcoholic drinks
(bottled water and pop) available for $1.00 each.
As always, iced tap water is available for free, as is tea and coffee.

We don't think this effected the evening.
This change represents a minor inconvenience, not a problem,
as far as I can tell.

Not having a bartender represents a savings for us,
since we have always paid for the bartender directly,
above and beyond the cost of the hall rental.
Such savings will impact any changes to admission price for next year.

If you have an opinion, please feel free to contact the Legion directly.

March, 2008

A good turnout, and lots of good dancing!

March, 2008

As anticipated, turnout was a bit lighter this past Saturday.

The play list is now online. See the line below.

We knew some people would be away at the Fort Wayne workshop,
and others has personal commitments.
The turnout was good, and we all had a great evening of dancing!.

The dances taught by our guest instructor, Donna Laurin, are linked below.

March, 2008

So much for the weather keeping people at home!

March, 2008

There was a great turnout last night!

Many thanks to all who braved the weather
to dance with us.

The play list is now online, linked below.

Feb 2008

More snow threatening...but not a lot!

Feb 2008

Update as of Saturday @ 1135hrs

Just back from Toronto - Young and Steeles area,
via Steeles, Hwy 407, and Hwy 410.

Certainly less than ideal driving, but not terrible.
The drive over was trickier, since there was slush on the road.
The slush is now gone.
Environment Canada forecast for Brampton and Toronto
sounds worse than for Hamilton.

It is our opinion that we should hold the dance tonight.

We recognize that many people are not comfortable driving in this weather.
If so, we hope to see you in March!
If you are coming, please drive carefully,
and add a bit of travel time to allow for the road conditions.

Update as of Friday, Feb 8/08 @ 0913hrs and @1124hrs:

The weather report for Hamilton for Saturday is looking just fine!
Environment Canada is calling for 2cm snow
during the morning and afternoon.
High of 2 and a low of 0.

Yeah!

We are really getting beat up this year by snowfalls!

The Envinroment Canada forecast for this Saturday,
as of Thursday, is "periods of snow".
680News this morning was calling for 5 - 6cm snow.
That is a lot less than we had during the December dance!

Unless something very, very drastic happens,
the February 9 dance is on!

In other news

First - guest instructors names have been added to
the list of 2008 dates.
This will be updated as we fill
the remaining spots.

Second - I have added the instructor names and
choreographer's names to our past dances below.

Dec 2007

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...
And it did!
But we danced anyways!!

Dec 2007

The pot luck finger food table was a huge success!
Many thanks to all those who contributed -
both bringing snacks, and by enjoying them!

Excellent turnout for a December dance,
'specially with a snow storm threatening.

The storm did not blow in to Dundas until much later than expected.
We shut down a half hour early, just in case.
A lot of people left after the 11:00PM draws,
which should have put them ahead of most of the storm.

Monica taught Kathy Hunyadi's dance Christmas Everyday.
The play list is now available!

Next Dundas dance is on February 9, 2008.

Christmas is coming!

And we are going to celebrate the season
with a pot luck Christmas goodie table,
and lots and lots of music and friends and dancing!

Bring your favourite finger food for a buffet table
at our December 1, 2007 dance.

Coffee and tea provided.
Cash bar will be open, of course
Non-alcoholic carryins are welcome, as always.

A special Christmas Dance flyer is available.

Great turnout on November 3!

Even more proof of the old saying:
The More, The Merrier!

November 3 set another attendance record!

As always, many thanks to all who danced with us last night.

Special thanks to our guest instructor,
Jennie Johns from Windsor, Ontario.
She taught Wanna Know Why,
choreographed by Maggie Gallagher.

The play list and step sheet are now online, linked below.

From 8:00PM until 1:00AM, we danced to 79 songs.
Including the warmup dances and lesson,
those who were there for the full evening
danced to a total of 88 songs!

The Effect of Date Changes - Part II

November 7, 2008

We are pleased to announce that Carmen Mah,
originally scheduled to teach for us on Nov 8/08,
will be our guest instructor at our December dance!

Please join us in welcoming Carmen on December 6, 2008!

Updated 2008 Flyter

November 7, 2008

An updated version of our 2008 flyer,
which includes our 2009 dates,
is now available in Adobe pdf format.

The Effect of Date Changes - Instructor Change

October 9, 2008

Because of the change of date for our November dance,
Carmen Mah is not able to attend.

Fred Buckley has kindly agreed to help us out!

Our apologies for any inconveniences that we have caused
by changing the date of our November dance.

2009 Dates Have Been Set!

October 9, 2008

Our dates for 2009 include:

January 17
February 21
May 2
June 6
July 4
November 7
December 5

The flyer will be updated in the next day or two.

Schedule Changes: October and November Dates

September 22, 2008

We are cancelling the dance scheduled for October 4, 2008.

Our apologies.

We feel this is necessary, since attendance will be very low.

The November dance has been changed from November 8
to November 15.
The December dance remains unchanged.

Play list for Aug 16 dance now online

August 22, 2008

The play list for our August 16, 2008 dance is now online.

As you will see from the times, we started a little late,
and ended earlier than usual.

The late start was due to the street closures in Dundas
for the Annual Cactus Festival.
People were late arriving, so we gave them a bit more time
so they would not miss the lesson.

Ending early in summer is not unusual.

Our next dance in October will better follow the published times
